Through empathetic listening and encouragement, peer supporters are an integral part of helping individuals. The more we learn about the fundamental value of social support, the more we realize that simply “being there” can be of enormous help to people with mental health and substance abuse setbacks.

The misconception that a "peer supporter" is automatically a criminal often stems from the fact that many peer support programs are designed to help individuals with histories of criminal behavior, particularly in the context of rehabilitation and reintegration, leading to an association between the "peer" role and past criminal activity, even though not all peer supporters have a criminal background; this association can be further reinforced by negative stereotypes and a lack of understanding about the true nature of peer support work.
